WHAT DOES EACH CATEGORY MEAN?

ADVERTISEMENTS

Advertisements include designing for print publications such as magazines and newspapers. Most magazine ads are full colour and range from a small 1/8th of a page to a full page ad with a bleed (bleed means that the ad doesn't have a border - it goes right to the edge of the page). Newspaper ads also have a similar size range but can be designed in black & white, 2 colour or full 4 colour.

BROCHURES

Brochure design can vary greatly in size, from a 2-sided, 4" x 9" rack card to an 8.5" x 11", multi page document - and everything in between. Most brochures that we have created are full 4 colour, but often to save money, we have been asked to design either black & white or 2 colour pieces. Sometimes, using less than 4 colour can also be a design choice when trying to convey a certain look and feel. To be different and stand out from the crowd, unusual sizes and shapes can be used.

CAMPAIGNS

Campaigns can encompass anywhere from one to all of the categories listed here to create a brand or a specific targeted message. When creating a campaign, it is imperative to know the target market and to keep consistency between each design piece as, it's possible if not probable that the target market will be viewing each design category. If there is inconsistency, the campaign can fall apart and some of the set goals and opportunities may be missed. Of all the categories, this one involves the most initial planning.

CORPORATE IDENTIFICATION

Corporate ID isn't the only part of branding your company, but it is the most obvious as it will incorporate your company's logo, contact information and, possibly, a tagline. A good corporate identification is a great investment as it will be an integral part of the branding of your company.

Corporate ID can include:

  Business Cards   Envelopes   Notepads

DIGITAL MEDIA

In a world where businesses are going the route of the paperless office, digital media methods such as eNewsletters, eBlasts and Flash animations are taking the place of paper mailouts and static presentations.

In order to have current customers and potential clients take notice, you want to have something that stands out from the competition. At Graphic Depictions, we have a great deal of experience in creating aesthetically pleasing, professional and effective multimedia products including: HTML emails, PowerPoint presentations and Flash animations.

LOGO DESIGN

Logo design is one of the most important aspects of corporate identification. It is your company's reflection and is, many times, your first impression. It is important to make sure that it is done right. All steps of the logo design must be well thought out. Some of these include colour, font choice, whether or not to include an icon and the tagline (the tagline is a few brief words giving a quick snapshot about what your company represents, believes and how you can help your clients).

MAILERS & POSTCARDS

Mailers & postcards are similar to brochures except that they are each, in general, a single or double-sided piece (as opposed to a folded piece) that gives a quick bit of information about your company and possibly a current promotion. These can be good, quick mail-outs to clients that have signed up for information, are in your database or if you are targeting prospective clients in a certain geographical area. They are usually branded similarly to your existing collateral (marketing collateral is the collection of media used to support the sales of a product or service. These sales aids are intended to make the sales effort easier and more effective. The brand of the company usually presents itself by way of its collateral to enhance its brand).

OUTDOOR SIGNAGE

Outdoor signage includes a few different formats including but not limited to:

Bus Sides, Backs & Wraps   Vehicle Wraps

Creating outdoor signage comes with its challenges. One of them is that photography must be as high a resolution as possible. Low resolution images will look very pixelated and blurry once blown up in size. If good quality photography is not available from the client, a good option is to use high resolution stock photography that is relevant to the intended message. As well, especially in the case of billboards, font size is a key consideration. With cars driving by at high speeds, the font should be large enough in size to be readable at a glance. As well, because of the short viewing time, a good billboard design should have no more than seven elements, including imagery, logos and words.

POSTERS & INDOOR SIGNAGE

There are many different sizes and formats of posters and indoor signage including the following:

  Table Talkers   Tradeshow Booth Signage

In general, indoor signage is a quick look at your brand and usually contains a promotion or specific message. Some engaging imagery along with a great headline will draw viewers to continue on reading the piece.

SUPPLEMENTS, PROGRAMS & BOOKLETS

Supplements are usually inserted into a newspaper. The message can range from general information about your company to a specific program or promotion. A supplement is usually close to tabloid size (17" x 11") folded in half. There can also be more pages within. Programs and booklets usually contain more pages and, thus more information. They also vary in size.

WEBSITE DESIGN

Website (also spelled web site) design includes many aspects. Good design will be relatively quick-loading, and will engage the viewer immediately. It should be created to allow the viewer to want to move forward into the site to read more about your company and promotions. As well, the site should be easily navigable and all pages should be accessible within one or two mouse clicks from anywhere in the site. The main menu should not change when moving from page to page.

Search engine optimization is a very important part of web design as many prospective customers use Google and other search engines to search for companies. For good search engine optimization, it is essential to have any relevant keywords within the actual text of, at least, the home page. It should be noted that Google is not an exact science and the rules can change. Graphic Depictions will do everything that we can from our end to help you rank in the search engines.
